For the past two decades, the default architecture for enterprise IP management has been monolithic: one platform that handles docketing, portfolio management, analytics, renewals, and, increasingly, AI-assisted workflows. Anaqua, Clarivate (CIPO), Questel, and Dennemeyer all built their businesses on this premise. The pitch was integration: everything in one place, one vendor relationship, one data model.
That architecture is now being challenged by a fundamental shift in how software systems communicate. The Model Context Protocol (MCP), and the broader move toward composable, agent-based architecture, allows specialized systems to interoperate without requiring a single monolithic platform. An AI-native drafting platform can connect to a portfolio management system. A trademark clearance engine can feed results directly into a prosecution workflow. A renewal management module can pull deadline data from any source, not only from its own database.
This matters for IP teams because it changes the buying decision from "which platform does the most things" to "which combination of specialized platforms, connected through open protocols, delivers the best outcome for our specific workflows." The first question rewards breadth of feature list. The second rewards fit, and fit is measurable in a way that feature count is not.
The practical implications are significant. First, vendor lock-in decreases. When platforms communicate through standardized protocols, the switching cost for any individual component drops sharply. An analytics layer can be replaced without rebuilding the entire stack, which restores negotiating position at renewal: the incumbent is no longer defended by the cost of leaving.
Second, AI adoption accelerates. Monolithic platforms add AI as a feature on top of legacy architecture, typically a chatbot or an automation layer bolted onto a database designed in 2008. Composable architecture allows AI-native platforms to be deployed at the workflow level, where they can reach the specific data they need without navigating a platform's internal constraints.
Third, the evaluation framework changes. Instead of scoring platforms on feature completeness, IP teams need to evaluate composability, API openness, MCP compatibility, and integration architecture. The IP management system that scores highest on a traditional requirements matrix may score lowest on readiness for the next decade of IP operations.
There is a cost to the modular model that deserves to be stated plainly. A monolithic platform hides its handoffs inside a single database; a composable stack exposes them. Work passing between a search engine, a drafting platform, an internal reviewer, and outside counsel now crosses boundaries that no single vendor owns. That is an operational gain only if someone can see the whole chain, who holds the file, how long each step takes, what it costs, and where it waits. Without that visibility, composability simply relocates the opacity rather than removing it.
Not every IP team should abandon its monolithic platform tomorrow. But every IP team should begin assessing the composability of its stack: how open each component is, where MCP-native platforms could augment or eventually replace an existing element, how much of the current spend is defended by switching cost rather than by performance, and whether the team has the internal capability to manage a more modular architecture. A short, honest maturity assessment along those axes is enough to establish a baseline, and it is more useful before a renewal cycle than during one.
The discipline that makes a modular stack governable is measurement. Once each step is instrumented, time, cost, quality, and how long a handoff waits, the architectural question stops being a matter of conviction and becomes a matter of evidence.
